Unity Art Collective is a contemporary art collective based in Nairobi, Kenya, working across art and murals, fashion and upcycling, dance, apparel, content, basketball, golf and green building. Its tagline, "Unity Powers the People", sums up the model: one collective, many practices, with artists credited and supported in every project.

What makes Unity a collective?

A collective is a group of creatives who work together under one name while keeping their own practices. At Unity, artists, designers, dancers, models and filmmakers collaborate on projects, and each piece of content puts the people who made it in front of new audiences. Unity says its content puts artists first: it uses its platforms to tell artists' stories, share their work and open doors for them.

What kinds of work does Unity do?

Art and murals. Unity creates murals and contemporary work, including custom art commissions. It has completed two artist-funded community murals: one at Lavington Girls Secondary School and a community project at Lifestyle Gigiri.

Fashion and dance. Unity's fashion practice covers runway and upcycled design. Its dance practice runs performances and community sessions.

Apparel. Unity sells caps, tees and a grey hoodie, paid by M-Pesa Paybill 516600 using account 944330# plus the item code in capitals, such as 944330#HOODIE.

Content. Unity offers videography, event coverage, short-form editing, social content management, curation and AI-assisted production, with people making the creative decisions.

Sustainability. Through the Unity Art Club at Lavington Girls Secondary School, students paint murals, try 3D printing, visit galleries and plant trees, including 489 trees with the Green Future Initiative. Unity is also a Corporate Leader in the Kenya Green Building Society and has prepared more than 60 giant bamboo poles.

How is Unity different from a gallery?

Unity focuses on collaboration and community impact rather than on a single exhibition room. Its work shows up where people are: in schools, community projects, events, fashion, online content and apparel. Students have also visited established Nairobi galleries, including One Off Gallery and the Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute, as part of the art club.
