Levi James Howze: from Army command to risk analytics to Nairobi

Why I built Unity

I was raised in Detroit, Michigan. I served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army, then worked in risk analytics in global asset management. Then I moved to Nairobi and founded Unity Art Collective.

The work has changed. The discipline has not: plan carefully, measure honestly, and build something that lifts the people around you. Unity is where I put that to work, with artists, designers and partners across Nairobi.

The trajectory

01 · U.S. Army

Command and operational discipline

As a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army, I managed human capital for a 2,500-person regiment and reduced operational costs by 50% under strict constraints.

02 · Institutional finance

Risk and financial analytics

I moved from the military into institutional analytics, quantifying exposure and modeling capital systems across GE Asset Management, State Street Global Advisors and BlackRock Aladdin. I was an enterprise risk analyst at GE Asset Management and a fixed income risk analyst at State Street Global Advisors. The job was to turn raw data into decisions.

03 · Nairobi

Founding Unity Art Collective

In Nairobi I founded Unity Art Collective, bringing together fine art, sustainable fashion, green architecture and emerging technology. We turn discarded denim and other used materials into new garments, paint murals, build WebXR art experiences and host community nights like Art After Dark.

04 · Legacy

Bamboo building and the next generation

Unity is a Corporate Leader member of the Kenya Green Building Society, and I champion thermally cured, carbon-negative Giant Bamboo construction. Through the Unity Art Club at Lavington Girls School, we pair tree planting and paper upcycling with mural painting and 3D printing.
